Nyagaroon is the cultural name given to a place on the Acheron River within the Cathedral Ranges Cultural Landscape context. WA has been engaged to work within a co-design framework with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council to design the transformation of this landscape, its infrastructure, and its buildings into a thriving cultural place for the Taungurung community.

Previously a youth justice site on crown land, this 256-acre site has a complex and painful history, and has recently been gifted back to the Taungurung people.
Our team has been engaged to work with community, developing tools and frameworks to empower Taungurung people to make positive decisions for the future of this place. We operate within a collaborative network of architects, landscape architects, land management specialists and community groups to establish a Taungurung led vision for Nyagaroon, identify pathways to healing knowledge and healing Country and create learning opportunities through connecting to Country.
This project is guided by the Cultural Landscape Management Strategy and led by the Taungurung Land and Waters Council.

The Cabin for a Coastal Garden is a compact and simple project
designed to meet our client's need for an extended space that integrates
seamlessly with their existing home's coastal garden. Utilising off-site prefabrication
construction systems, the Cabin is a thoughtful response to the
evolving living and work environment needs, providing a space for our client to engage
with their work while staying connected to cycles of the outdoor garden space.

An urban infill project, the Room in Hawthorn offers our clients an additional room to their existing single storey unit, designed as a prefabricated structure. The design is a response to a variety of regulatory pressures defined by the planning scheme of this inner-city Melbourne suburb. Imagined as an additional form added to the gap between 2 small pre-war housing units, openings are cut out of the form to provide views, light and connections. The form is cut and altered to allow for sunlight to adjoining open space and protrudes in place to avoid overlooking into neighbouring private spaces. The interior of the addition is treated as a warm, textured space, allowing for a mix of uses from working to sleeping. It is supported by a small bathroom and storage area.

The following project text is written by Nigel Bertram and Catherine Murphy -
A collaborative research project, baanytaageek: Great Swamp Regenerative Park, is underway to (re)find these lost landscapes. Involving a multidisciplinary team from the fields of architecture, landscape, planning, water, ecology and agriculture, the project will explore ways to (re)present this place as viable, inclusive and productive in the context of the Healesville to Phillip Island Nature Link, which aims to create a bio-link (otherwise known as a wildlife corridor) of national significance. Currently fragmentary and highly vulnerable in the face of expanding urban processes and climate pressures such as sea-level rise, we want to draw attention to the suppressed natural water and soil systems of this altered ecosystem as the foundation of a regenerative future.

&nbsp;Part of the research project, the exhibition baanytaageek: Great Swamp Fragments features 3D point cloud models of swampland remnants with moving and still images, enabling their intricate and complex details to be ‘visited’ in new ways. Mostly locked away from view, their re-presentation renders these isolated places visible and provides a new type of accessibility without violating the spaces’ fragility. A large map shows layers of archival material that trace the Great Swamp’s dynamic past, revealing the underlying waterscape in the context of radical colonial change. Boon Wurrung language provides access to parbinata’s (Mother Earth’s) grand masterplan of learning.

In the heart of Naarm's urban landscape, we transformed a once-disused inner-city car park into a multi-generational family dwelling - the Seddon House. This house complements the surrounding low-rise properties, designed to create a sense of a single-storey structure when viewed from the street. This illusion is created by extending a large metal roof over the second storey, allowing the full extent of the home to be revealed only as one moves around it.

<img width="1704" height="1278" width_o="1704" height_o="1278" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b1073ba69deba94ad91d8fca37781908a652d612860032c1bcc72739911b18ba/seddon-house-osk-architects-residential-house-melbourne-australia_dezeen_1704_ss_3-852x609.jpg" data-mid="180350410" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b1073ba69deba94ad91d8fca37781908a652d612860032c1bcc72739911b18ba/seddon-house-osk-architects-residential-house-melbourne-australia_dezeen_1704_ss_3-852x609.jpg" />

In our design, sustainability remains a key focus. The roof, a dominant architectural feature, not only provides the key expression of the building but also serves multiple functional purposes. It defines the scale of the house, controls light and temperature, collects rainwater, and hosts solar panels. Anticipating the site's propensity to flood, we constructed the entire building on a floating slab that raises the house above historical flood levels.

The entrance, integrated into a largely glazed facade, leads to an open-plan living area, fostering a sense of unity in the home. The ground floor houses the kitchen and dining area, which extends onto a wooden deck, culminating in a comfortable lounge positioned beneath the sloping roof. We incorporated a range of features to enhance functionality, such as awning windows for improved ventilation and integrated storage solutions under the staircase.

This is a ‘building in the round’ with three main entry approaches connecting the main desire lines. Peripheral buildings act as signposts and showcases. The building consists of loose volumes of gently reflective transparent external surfaces combined with mixed media screens and warm timber interiors supported in a superstructure framework. The dynamic plan and volumetric arrangement are collected in space through a mesh ground plane and large dish shaped roof. The dish roof supports a moss and lichen living terrain imagined as a separate performative research ‘garden’.

	<img width="7016" height="4960" width_o="7016" height_o="4960" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b7ad9283a36dbcc0512bd3dcf6a28c56d937b59e85d74cd999a76ddec737499a/Ecological-Research-Institute-Plan-1-500.png" data-mid="178429556" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b7ad9283a36dbcc0512bd3dcf6a28c56d937b59e85d74cd999a76ddec737499a/Ecological-Research-Institute-Plan-1-500.png" />

A gradient of technological interfaces has been conceived in unity with the architectural and landscape design so that technology mixes freely with reflections of reality. A ‘Digital Art Platform’ provides content for these interfaces; this content has the potential to reveal and bring together embedded narratives, histories and events that occur within the immediate place, and more broadly the wetland context.
The project provides a unique window on the nationally threatened Banksia Woodland ecosystem proposing the retention of the last remnant trees and understorey adjacent to the proposed building, at once engaging the visitor with a context and issue that is much broader than the building and immediate site, capturing and connecting to the larger ecological, sociological and environmental systems.

This First Nation Cultural Design Brief
presents a series of design principles
gathered through the work of the Cultural
Authority team of the WSW Aboriginal
Refuge Healing Partnership. The design
principles were founded on a connection
to Country, caring for people and best
practice sustainable development through
a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.
We see the role of this brief as one that
provides the groundwork for a deep and
rich process of design. We sought the
contribution of women to share their
learning experiences on Country, which
strengthen and deepen the values outlined
in this Brief.

<img width="1600" height="1000" width_o="1600" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/57a8bdfed563e1b4ebf4b1b71825548baa80432896e8c05d8540cf63562d3abe/2206_WSW_lidar-site-01_ws.jpg" data-mid="177613518" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/57a8bdfed563e1b4ebf4b1b71825548baa80432896e8c05d8540cf63562d3abe/2206_WSW_lidar-site-01_ws.jpg" />
During these visits to places on Country
we documented details of landscape,
forms and textures, materials, pathways
and buildings through photography. These
photographs are presented throughout
the brief, acting as visual cues for the
relevant design principles. In addition
to photography, the document includes
details of the project site, 3D scanned
using LiDAR scanning technology.
<img width="6720" height="3776" width_o="6720" height_o="3776" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6ec4e1afe26bfce9d7bb73e86476fbcaf648a061d68458397be50a233fe88946/240A8200.jpg" data-mid="183392228" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6ec4e1afe26bfce9d7bb73e86476fbcaf648a061d68458397be50a233fe88946/240A8200.jpg" />The
connection between image (photo and
scan) and text emphasises the importance
of local site, as steppingstones to talk
about the essential design elements for a
strong and effective healing environment.
Taking an ecological view of the site,
a landscape first approach involves
systems of regeneration, restoration and
of repair. This reflects the healing focus
of the site and the journey that residents,
their children and staff will undertake.
This is seen as crucial for the story of a
healing centre. Aligning with the notion of
Country, this is a holistic view of people,
animals, resources and plants as equal and
balanced.
We hope that this document will be a
valuable tool to ensure a local, holistic and
cultural approach to health and wellbeing
is achieved through this project.

With S-I Projects, we have contributed to the baanytaageek - Great Swamp Fragments publication as a part of the exhibition held at MUMA Museum in 2023.
The following project text is written by Nigel Bertram and Catherine Murphy -
Two hundred years ago, on the estate of the mayune
buluk of the Boon Wurrung language group, a vast
baanytaageek, the Great Swamp, was covered with
shallow waters and thick, impenetrable vegetation. With
much difficulty, this dynamic low-lying region on the
northern edge of Western Port Bay was comprehensively
cleared and drained in the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, and subdivided for farming,
infrastructure and settlement. Today we are all
custodians of this altered ecosystem, degraded after
more than a century of extractive processes. Only a few
remarkable fragments of the wetland complex remain—
a raised mound of melaleuca, a tidal inlet edged with
mangroves, and a dense thicket on a boggy creek bed.
This exhibition reveals the intricacies of these particular,
isolated and generally inaccessible fragments through
moving and still imagery, a geophonic soundscape,
Boon Wurrung spoken language, and a layered, archival
map of the larger catchment.<img width="3840" height="2560" width_o="3840" height_o="2560" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/96772aa378f99ba5554a38bcb3c0611316f9171ad2df482780e2c932de1c91a1/Page-2-3.png" data-mid="177596752" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/96772aa378f99ba5554a38bcb3c0611316f9171ad2df482780e2c932de1c91a1/Page-2-3.png" /><img width="3840" height="2560" width_o="3840" height_o="2560" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/522a3d532809fd1771ee4ae7c9a317a80a7317f901aeb0e81f0f35d270235e59/Page-8-9.png" data-mid="177596676" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/522a3d532809fd1771ee4ae7c9a317a80a7317f901aeb0e81f0f35d270235e59/Page-8-9.png" /><img width="3840" height="2560" width_o="3840" height_o="2560" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a46dbb4c1fe1df8d38ba29bf412fc084b2f756d4b2d01d692c7b3835caa1f27f/Page-18-19.png" data-mid="177596677" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a46dbb4c1fe1df8d38ba29bf412fc084b2f756d4b2d01d692c7b3835caa1f27f/Page-18-19.png" /><img width="3840" height="2560" width_o="3840" height_o="2560" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8961c746dc01ac54ad2e37d73c7b32acb5a87ce0c150727254b0782cab70885a/Page-22-23.png" data-mid="177596678" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8961c746dc01ac54ad2e37d73c7b32acb5a87ce0c150727254b0782cab70885a/Page-22-23.png" /><img width="5231" height="2939" width_o="5231" height_o="2939" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2792f07762f1b810f391685e787f4b5a578d976c750a1785c41cb48de2d85c66/240A8191.jpg" data-mid="183379855" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2792f07762f1b810f391685e787f4b5a578d976c750a1785c41cb48de2d85c66/240A8191.jpg" />
