A small addition to a house in Hawthorn, Melbourne. The site is characterised by an intimate cul-de-sac connecting a set of 1970s brick housing units. The space between the units presented an opportunity to the clients to add a studio, fitting the new space between the tight gap above the existing carport. The design involved carefully navigating the existing structure and its boundaries, and responding to planning envelopes and overlooking restrictions. The new addition seeks to connect with the garden context of the cul-de-sac, framing views and providing new volume, whilst respecting the existing character of this intimate context.
A number of layered seating areas are designed to provide refuge and connection to the garden.
